The Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park is considered one of the most beautiful natural landscapes of southern Europe, is located within the Baetic System and extends into the western area of the province of Málaga, occupying about 18600 hectares, it is a lot of the region of the Serranía de Ronda and occupying, therefore, the municipalities of Alozaina, Ojén, Casarabonela, Istán, Monda, Yunquera, El Burgo, Ronda, Tolox and Parauta.
It is the heart of a larger space that occupies part of the regions of the Serranía de Ronda, the Costa del Sol and the Guadalhorce Valley, cataloged as a Biosphere Reserve.
The towns that make up the Sierra de las Nieves have places of interest that in turn make up the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park. We can find the Sima Honda in Parauta, the Cave of the Tinaja, the Sima del Aire and the Sima Prestá in Tolox, as well as springs like the sulphurous water baths also in Tolox.
Within the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park there are no roads or populations, only forest tracks that access the interior of the mountain area. There are three recreational areas, the Fuensanta Recreation Area (620 m), located in the municipality of El Burgo, next to Cortijo de la Fuensanta; the Sauces Recreational Area (838 m), also located in the municipality of El Burgo and the Quejigales Recreation Area (1300 m), located in the municipality of Ronda.
In the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, the highest massifs of the province of Málaga stand out, among them, such as Torrecilla (1919 m), Cerro Alto (1813 m) or Cerro de Pilones (1781 m). Places of the most attractive for lovers of rural tourism and adventure sports.
Located in the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park we will find other orographic sites that contrast with the previous ones, these are the natural pools and wells, among which GESM stands out with 1101 meters of depth, or the Green River Gorge.
The Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park enjoys a Mediterranean climate with a higher than usual rainfall level (1000 liters/year) due to the influence of the humid winds of the Atlantic and being the first mountain range to be found by Atlantic fronts that penetrate the west. The rainiest months are december, january and february. It is the altitude of the summits of the mountain range, which favors the presence of the snows that give name to the mountain range and that were maintained throughout the year.
Its flora is one of the richest in Andalusia, constituting one of the most important ecological and genetic reserves. In the high mountain they emphasize the gall oak and the pinsapo (in the Sierra de Yunquera and the Sierra de Tolox). At more moderate altitudes we find pine forests and other species such as maples, yew trees, holm oaks, carob trees, chestnuts and cork oaks.
Within the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, there are examples of trees that, due to their size, have been included in the Singular Trees of Andalusia catalog, prepared by the Department of the Environment of the Junta de Andalucía, and that you should not miss out on visit.
Pinsapo of the Escaleretas: Declared a Natural Monument, it is located in the area of La Cuesta de la Laja, in the municipality of Parauta; It is estimated with an age of around 500 years, notable for its more than 5 meters of perimeter in the shaft, a height of about 26 meters and a projection of its glass of more than 420 m2.
Pinsapo Moreno: Located in the place Cañada Bellina, in the municipality of Yunquera; It stands out mainly because its crown projects a shadow of about 230 m2, in addition the perimeter of its shaft is almost 6 meters and reaches a height of more than 21 meters.
Cork oak of the Casarón de los Bancales: Located in the area of Los Bancales, in the municipality of Monda; Its almost 9 meters of perimeter stand out at the base of the shaft, its height of more than 3 meters and a projection of its cup of more than 266 m2 with a height of this of almost 15 meters.
Pinsapo of La Alcazaba: Located in the area of Cañada del Pilar, in the municipality of Tolox; It stands out for its more than 5 meters of perimeter of shaft, its height of 28 meters and the projection of the 190 m2 cup.
Pinsapo of La Perra: Located in the Port of La Perra, in Tolox; It stands out for its more than 5 meters of perimeter in the shaft, its 22 meters high and a projection of its glass of almost 220 m2.
Saint Chestnut: Located outside the boundaries of the Natural Park but within the area defined as a Biosphere Reserve, it is located in the Hoyo del Bote area, in the municipality of Istán; Its age is estimated over 800 years, the perimeter of its shaft measures about 15 meters, more than 24 meters high and a projection of its crown around 510 m2. It is proposed to be considered a Natural Monument of Andalusia.
As for the fauna that can be found in the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, we highlight mammals such as the mountain goat (especially in the Torrecilla area and in the Sierra de Tolox), the fallow deer, the mouflon, the wild boar, the roe deer, the fox, the rabbit, the hare, the otter, the badger, the weasel, the genet, the mongoose, the hedgehog, the marten and the wild cat.
In the group of birds, we can see raptors such as the golden eagle, the booted eagle, the short-toed eagle, the eagle of Bonelli, the harrier of Montagu, the goshawk, the vulture, the hawk, the owl, the eagle owl, the black kite and the kestrel. And others such as the partridge, the wood pigeon, the cuckoo, the redstart, the swift, the warbler, the scribe, the alpine accentor, the greenfinch, the goldfinch, the black-capped merlin, the red rock and the coal. We will also find reptiles such as the horseshoe snake, the bastard snake and the lizard.
The Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park presents an impressive natural wealth, with dreamy landscapes and a great variety of ecosystems and presence of unique species in the world that can be met in an enjoyable way by doing some of the bike routes enabled in the zone. One of the best routes is the GR 243 that runs from north to south through all the municipalities of the park joining the urban centers of the towns from Ronda to Istán along the different stages. In addition, the area has an excellent cuisine that mixes the traditional with a marked Arab influence where dishes such as flour porridge with honey, almond cheese or soup of the seven branches stand out.
