Ronda is one of the oldest cities in Spain. A destination that offers an impressive historical-artistic wealth, made up of monuments from different eras, which inevitably transport you to the past as you stroll through its streets. However, in addition to its monumental beauty, you can always enjoy wine tourism in Ronda.
In this sense, the Málaga Provincial Council tries to promote the Ronda and Málaga Wine Route, which is certified by the Spain Wine Cities Association as a very important factor in the economic development and tourist promotion of the province of Málaga. This route provides you with a quality experience where the wine culture and the interior landscape star in a tour of the different production areas, such as Montes de Málaga, La Axarquía, Manilva, Nororma and Serranía de Ronda. The route shows you different restaurants, wineries and activities related to wine, with the uniqueness that characterizes each of the territories.
Without a doubt, the land of Ronda has something magical that opens the doors to fields where a wide variety of types of grapes are grown, but it is curious how varieties of white grapes, such as Chardonnay, Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Viognier; and red grapes, such as Romé, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot, Graciano, Malbec, Monastrell and Tintilla de Rota, can be grown in such a small area of Spain.
Serranía de Ronda wine-growing area is part of the Málaga Appellation of Origin and the Sierras de Málaga Appellation of Origin. The uniqueness of its wines is due to the southernmost latitude of the Mediterranean slope, the geological diversity of its soils and the altitude and climatic characteristics, all these premises configure a scenario with a biodiversity that allows the development of red wines, white wines and rosé wines with a great display of aromas and great personality.
In addition, you can learn more about the viticulture of Ronda thanks to the Ronda Wine Museum. It is a Wine Interpretation Centre of Bodegas La Sangre de Ronda where you can enjoy wine in different ways, such as participating in gymkhana, stepping on the grape or conducting various tastings. Its intention is to investigate and disseminate practices related to wine, as well as all the history it has generated for so many centuries.
With more than twenty operating wineries that are spread over the scarcely 160 hectares of vineyards that exist in the area, Ronda is, without a doubt, a must if you are interested in wine tourism. And, as we have already mentioned, its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, its climatic conditions and the great geological diversity of the terrain, fill the wines of this municipality with uniqueness.
The wineries of Ronda are located in the outskirts of the city, so it is possible to do an oenological route and get to know its historic center in the same visit. Although any season is ideal for this type of tourism in this town, the best is during the month of September, since it is the month in which the harvest takes place. It is then that the wineries can breathe an atmosphere of harvest and joy, with an intense aroma of red fruits.
In the Serranía de Ronda there is a significant number of wineries, many of which are within the municipality of Ronda. Here you will find the most representative wineries in the area, so that you can make the most of your visit to Ronda and enjoy the wine tourism that the territory offers.
Very close to the ancient Roman city of Acinipo, you can visit Bodegas Chinchilla. It is a family business that was one of the first to open to the public. A benchmark within the Andalusian wine scene for its careful production and cultivation processes, as well as for always using the latest technology.
One of the most visited is Bodegas Descalzos Viejos, since it is located in a building from 1505 and draws attention for its historical appeal, as well as for its wines. Retamero and Salesi families acquired the property in 1998 and converted it into a winery. Its vineyards are located in the Tajo de Ronda itself, which offers extraordinary views. Its wines are characterized by having a special and different personality, as is its winery.
In Ronda you can also find one of the most charming, unique and smallest wineries in Andalusia. It is Bodegas Vetas, a business run by Juan Manuel Vetas and his wife, who are in charge of making and marketing the wines that today are a national benchmark. With only two hectares of land, this winery is capable of producing two small treasures: Petit Verdot, a tear wine, made only when the raw material is in perfect condition; and Vetas Selección, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc varieties, and completed with Petit Verdot.
Bodegas F-Schatz are located in one of the areas where many others are located, the Acinipo area. The owners of this small winery practice organic and biodynamic agriculture, obtaining very special and authentic wines, among which the Acinipo wine stands out, made with an Austrian grape variety that makes it different and that you cannot stop trying.
With a long winemaking tradition, Martin Kieninger started his Bodegas Kieninger project in 2000 with 4000 Austrian vines that provide very different wines, as well as other Spanish and French varieties. The process is based on organic biodynamic agriculture, a total respect for the land and traditional ways of processing.
Another winery in the Acinipo or the Old Ronda area, as it is also known, is Bodega Lunares, at more than 1000 meters of altitude. You can find it on a plot of about four hectares, called Finca Lunares, hence its name. This winery in Ronda produces wines with an overwhelming personality, intense, long and very well defined: Lunares Blanco, Lunares Rosado y Lunares Tinto.
Also in the Old Ronda area, you will be able to see Bodegas Excelencia, which operate a seven hectare plot, with the Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Tempranillo varieties. It produces high-quality wines, such as rosé wine, white wine, red wine, and vintage red wine.
In an exceptional terrain, a plain surrounded by mountains, very well oriented and at a height of 500 meters above sea level, the farm is located where you can visit Bodegas García Hidalgo. The characteristics mentioned give these lands the best characteristics to obtain an excellent grape of the Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot varieties.
On the other hand, you can visit Bodega Cuesta La Viña, protected by the Regulatory Council of Sierras de Málaga Appellation of Origin, and registered in the Serranía de Ronda sub-area. With organic farming, it obtains high quality wines, with great structure and minerality, from Tempranillo, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Graciano varieties. It makes two types of wines: a red wine, aged 12 months in French oak barrels, and a surprising rosé wine.
Also within Sierras de Málaga Appellation of Origin, Bodega Joaquín Fernández is located 3 km south of Ronda city, at about 700 meters above sea level facing south, on a clay-sandy soil, calcareous and very rich in minerals, which enriches the grape must and gives intensity to the flavor of the wine. It operates a farm of about four hectares, in an ecological way, of the varieties Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha, producing wines of exceptional quality.
Bodegas Morosanto take advantage of sixteen hectares of vineyards of the red grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Tempranillo, Petit Verdot; and Tintilla de Rota, as well as varieties of white grapes: Viognier and Chardonnay; on a plot with exceptional soil in terms of its geotechnical qualities, with a southeast orientation and about 800 meters above sea level. It produces three collections of wines, all of them of great quality. Of special mention is the Céspedes collection, with its vintage wines and reserve wines, of Petit Verdot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tintilla de Rota varieties.
A winery that supports its production in the authentic and indigenous is Bodega La Melonera, which produces exceptional red wines and white wines.
Finally, it is interesting that you also visit Bodegas Cezar. Although it is located in the municipality of Gaucín, about an hour from Ronda, this winery produces wines of the highest quality, from a vineyard located 680 meters above sea level, in a cool area between Guadiaro River and Genal River, oriented towards the west, with great differences in temperature between day and night, which generates thick skin grapes, a necessary condition to achieve a very dense color.
